Byline: Daily News

PALMDALE - Victorian England will visit the Palmdale Playhouse this weekend and next in Desert Opera Theatre's production of the light opera ``H.M.S. Pinafore H.M.S. Pinafore, or The Lass that Loved a Sailor, is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of the Savoy Operas, and the first big hit by Gilbert and Sullivan. .''

Director Laura Hemenway describes the musical - which takes place aboard the British naval ship A naval ship is a ship (or sometimes boat, depending on classification) used for combat purposes, commonly by a navy. ``It's sort of a satire of the class system of Victorian England,'' said Hemenway. ``It's a lot of fun, very silly stuff.''

There are 17 actors in the cast with the main characters being played by Guy Martin as Ralph Rackstraw; April Ann Davis

``I think people really need a comedic break right now,'' said Hemenway. ``It's a lot of fun. It's a relaxing, entertaining way to spend an evening.''

This is Hemenway's directorial debut with Desert Opera Theatre.

As a musician, she is normally the musical director, but she had a strong desire to direct this particular musical because of its past association with her childhood.

When she was 12, Hemenway and her friends put on a backyard show for the neighborhood and her mother made all the costumes.

I'm so excited about it, it's really been a blast.''

``H.M.S. Pinafore'' will be presented at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, at 2 p.m. Sunday this weekend, and 8 p.m. March 1 and 2, and 2 p.m. March 3, at the Palmdale Playhouse, 38334 10th St. East.
