The gates will open at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with sphere-making, wire-wrapping, silver chains and genealogy offered as the first events. Amgen's Mad Mission to Mars 2025 also debuts, an attraction that will run during the entire 12-day event. Other music artists set to perform at the fair include Chubby Checker, Glen Campbell and Styx. A Fiesta Day concert featuring Los Tuscanes De Tijuana is Aug. 5. For gastronomes, there are cooking contests for lemon pies, best apple dish, best seafood dish and the crowd-pleasing contest to turn Spam into a gourmet dish. Other fair events include a children's museum, beef tasting, Academic Rodeo Spelling Bee, demolition derby and exhibits. The county fair began in the late 1800s and went dark only during times of war and the Great Depression.
