LANCASTER - Lewis Harrell of Lancaster is one of a special breed.

He turned 102 this year, which means he was born in the 19th century, has lived through the 20th and is starting the 21st.

Born April 7, 1897, he was 2 years old when the last turn of a century occurred.

During his next 100 years, he saw more progress and technological change than anyone could have imagined.

He was alive when the Wright Brothers took their first flight, Henry Ford built his Model-T, women gained the right to vote, indoor plumbing replaced outhouses OUTHOUSES. Buildings adjoining to or belonging to dwelling-houses.

Harrell was 32 when the stock market crashed and the world's economy sank into the Great Depression. He was 44 on Dec. 7, 1941, when the bombing of Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor, land-locked harbor, on the southern coast of Oahu island, Hawaii, W of Honolulu; one of the largest and best natural harbors in the E Pacific Ocean. In the vicinity are many U.S. military installations, including the chief U.S.  triggered U.S. entry into World War II.

"When they arrive, they find a place to sit and he immediately reads the newspaper - without glasses yet," said Nina Frazier, center director.

They attended the end-of-the-century celebration at the center Tuesday, and Harrell enjoyed himself, with Lee by his side to help him carry on conversations.

The Harrells moved to Lancaster about 11 years ago from Van Nuys and still have family there.

"We're just hoping to win the lottery so we can move back there to warmer winters," she said, "although we have to admit the last two have been nice here."

Menus for the week at the senior life nutrition sites in Lancaster, Palmdale and Pearblossom have been announced. All meals include bread, margarine and coffee, tea or milk for the suggested donation of $2.

Monday: Hamburger patty, french fries, carrots, fruit, salad with tomato, onion and lettuce.
