ALITALIA IAM MEMBERS TAKE STRIKE VOTE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) employed at Alitalia Airlines are conducting a strike vote today and tomorrow. The results of the vote will be released Tuesday morning, Aug. 24.
If the members vote for strike sanction, and contract negotiations are not successfully concluded, they will strike Alitalia Airlines on Sept. 2, 00:01 a.m. Alitalia is demanding the right to contract out all IAM work and, in effect, eliminate all IAM jobs. IAM District 142 President/General Chairman William O'Driscoll called the company's proposal "blatant union-busting" and predicted company efforts to destroy the union will fail.
O'Driscoll warned: "Alitalia would never even propose such a union- busting scam in its home country, and it won't get away with it in its host country. If the IAM is forced to strike, it will have the international solidarity of the members of the 6 million-member International Transportworkers Federation.
"We are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst," O'Driscoll added.
