ALHOSN University, a leading Abu Dhabi-based university dedicated to high-quality, value-based education, has yesterday (Sunday, November 15, 2009) hosted a major student session on road safety with Formula 3 driver and UN Road Safety Youth Ambassador Basil Shaaban Basil Shaaban (born March 27, 1980) is a Lebanese racing driver. He was born in Beirut. Basil also graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Astrophysics from the University of California, Berkeley.  organized by SalamaA - For Road Safety Public Awareness, an initiative of the Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy.

Salama is supported by Shell, the Emirates Driving Company, and the UAE Ministry of Interior.

The event was held at the university's campus, where Shaaban participated an interactive session promoting safe driving in the UAE, while sharing with students the tangible reasons that will help understand the importance of road safety law enforcement.

Basil commented: "Driving is my passion, so is promoting road safety. I take this as a real responsibility, particularly as I was brought up in the UAE and I feel it is my duty to help raise the awareness of youth about the dangers of the roads."

Salama demonstrated the use of the "seat belt convincer" --a device that shows the essential safety benefit of using seatbelts to secure vehicle occupants. The device simulates an abrupt stop at between 8 and 12 km/h. This marked yet another occasion for the Salama initiative to use simulators to convince drivers -- they made a major impression during the recent F1 FANZONEao ROAD SAFETY display on the Abu Dhabi Corniche cor¬∑niche ¬†

Mahasen Al Mahasneh, Students Activities Coordinator, ALHOSN University, said: "The young are often unaware of the terrible consequences of reckless driving reckless driving n. operation of an automobile in a dangerous manner under the circumstances, including speeding (or going too fast for the conditions, even though within the posted speed limit), driving after drinking (but not drunk), having too many passengers in . Our partnership with Salama enables us to take part in the education of tomorrow's drivers and help prevent road accidents.
