ALERT Companion II Used in First U.S. Case.

Business Editors/Health/Medical Writers/High-Tech Writers

WEST BERLIN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 31, 2003

EP MedSystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: EPMD EPMD Erick and Parrish Making Dollars (rap group)
EPMD Electric Plant Monitoring Device
EPMD Enlisted Personnel Management Director/Directorate
), a market leader in electrophysiology products used to diagnose and treat certain types of cardiac rhythm disorders, announced today that the ALERT(R) Companion II has been successfully used in its first routine internal cardioversion Cardioversion Definition

Cardioversion refers to the process of restoring the heart's normal rhythm by applying a controlled electric shock to the exterior of the chest.
 case in the United States.

Dr. James R. Higgins, a cardiologist practicing at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has found the ALERT(R) Internal Cardioversion System to be a useful alternative to external biphasic bi·pha·sic

Having two distinct phases: a biphasic waveform; a biphasic response to a stimulus.
cardioversion for patients in chronic atrial fibrillation atrial fibrillation

Irregular rhythm (arrhythmia) of contraction of the atria (upper heart chambers). The most common major arrhythmia, it may result as a consequence of increased fibrous tissue in the aging heart, of heart disease, or in association with severe infection.
(AF). "The ALERT system was utilized for a patient that had failed external biphasic cardioversion several times, and was anticipating either chronic AF or a lifelong regimen of antiarrhythmic drugs. Both situations are health risks for a patient. We used the ALERT(R) system, which easily cardioverted the patient back into normal sinus rhythm. The ALERT Internal Cardioversion is a new treatment option that gives the patient another chance to avoid chronic AF."

EPMD President & CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  Reinhard Schmidt stated, "Following thousands of successful outcomes in Europe over the last two years for treatment of both chronic AF and failed external cardioversion, we are looking forward to the introduction of this recently approved system to aid in the treatment of AF in critical care and chronic AF patient profiles in the United States. We are hopeful that this brings a profile of patients underserved by existing technologies a proven approved solution for the treatment of AF."

The ALERT(R) System delivers programmable low energy bi-phasic electrical impulses directly to the inside of a patient's heart to convert atrial fibrillation to a normal rhythm. The electrical impulses are delivered via the ALERT(R) catheter, a specially designed catheter used in tandem with an energy source called ALERT(R) Companion. Both the ALERT(R) catheter and ALERT(R) Companion, as a system, underwent a controlled, randomized clinical trial randomized clinical trial,

of over 150 patients demonstrating the products' safety and efficacy. The ALERT(R) System is covered by fourteen issued U.S. patents. Approximately 120 Companion II energy sources are presently in use in Europe.
