ALEMANY WINS IN FINAL SECONDS : ALEMANY 51, HAR.-WEST. 49.

Byline: Dave Desmond Daily News Staff Writer

Francine Bennette waited her turn.

She waited while upperclassmen grabbed rebounds, headlines and scholarships.

And she waited patiently.

This was to be the Alemany High School senior's year. The year she stepped into the spotlight at one of the area's most prominent girls' basketball programs.

Bennette broke her nose during a summer game, suffered through sciatic-nerve problems in her back, developed an ulcer from her back medication and loosened a tooth against the Wolverines Monday night at L.A. Baptist High.

Bloodied, perhaps even staggered, Bennette was still standing, however, when guard Kelli Kobayashi's pass found her under the basket in the waning seconds.

``I get angry at how things have gone for me,'' Bennette said. ``But I'm not going to let it get me down.''

Said coach Melissa Hearlihy: ``All those years of hard work are paying off, although in small dividends.''

The No. 5 Indians almost saw their league and current 13-game winning streak go up in smoke when, with the game tied at 49, Corrie Roberts stole a Kobayashi pass and sprinted downcourt down·court

The shot rolled off the rim, however, giving Bennette and Co. the chance to win it.

Roberts scored 10 points, including a crucial 3-pointer with 35 seconds left to force the tie. Freshman guard Brooke Porter scored 16 points for the Wolverines (13-6, 2-1), who had won six straight games. Carissa Abbott added nine points.

Kobayashi made five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. Dana Rios added 16 and freshman guard Kate Beckler contributed nine points. Bennette, a four-year varsity player, scored four.

Even in defeat, Harvard-Westlake, with a roster filled with young players, just might be eyeing the crowd.
