ALEMANY NOTEBOOK: KOBAYASHI CAPS HAPPY 4-YEAR RUN.

Byline: Rizza Yap Daily News Staff Writer

Kelli Kobayashi on Thursday practiced with her Alemany High girls' basketball team on home turf for the last time. On game days, she no longer will arrive at the tiny Nobel Middle School gym - the Indians' practice facility - for solo shootarounds.

Today, Kobayashi and her teammates board an 8:05 a.m. flight to Sacramento and practice from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in an unfamiliar school gym. On Saturday, they head to 17,317-seat ARCO Arena Coordinates:

run is enjoying the almost pressure-free role of the underdog. The Fighting Irish (21-10), who last fall lost a senior starter to injury, ended their regular season with just 15 victories and were seeded No. 8 in the Northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  regional. In that tournament, they upset three teams, including a 46-44 road victory against Bear River (33-1), which was undefeated until it faced Sacred Heart.

Last Saturday, for the region's title, the Irish defeated No. 2-seeded and defending regional champion Acalanes High, 56-50 in overtime.

``The biggest buzz is we're not the team in the Bay Area that's expected to still be alive (in the playoffs),'' eight-year coach Harrigan, a Sacred Heart alumnus ALUMNUS, civil law. A child which one has nursed; a foster child. Dig. 40, 2, 14. , said. ``No one expected us to beat these teams, and that took a lot of pressure off.

``We're going into the state final with the same idea. Alemany was the No. 1 seed in their division, so we're looking at this as playing another team who's supposed to be there - while we're not.''

The perfect place: On their way home from last Saturday's Southern Regional championship win, Alemany coach Melissa Hearlihy asked guard Kate Beckler whether she wanted to borrow the team's Southern Region championship plaque for a few days.

``But where am I going to put it?'' was Beckler's immediate response.

The Becklers' mantle mantle, portion of the earth's interior lying beneath the crust and above the core. It finally became a one-day fixture on the living-room floor, beside the couch - but not until it posed for a few photographs.

``We took pictures of me and the plaque,'' Beckler said, ``the plaque by itself, with me and my mom, me and my dad. . . ''

Late is great: Saturday's game is scheduled for 1:15 p.m., which probably means Alemany won't arrive at the arena until half past noon. Last weekend, the Indians arrived for their 6 p.m. game at the Long Beach Pyramid at 5:15 p.m. Dinner just ran later than expected, Hearlihy said. Another time during the season, Alemany was delayed by a traffic accident en route to the game.

As far as Hearlihy is concerned, arriving to the game a few minutes later than expected actually is beneficial.

``I think it's good for the girls. It keeps us loose if we're not totally restricted to a time schedule,'' she said.
