ALEMANY KNOCKS OFF HIGHLAND.

Byline: Daily News

That's not the way the ball bounces, at least not usually.

But it did Friday, bouncing Highland High School Highland High School or Highlands High School may refer to:

With two out in the bottom of the seventh, Bulldogs reliever Kelly Presten's 2-2 pitch ricocheted off the dirt, off catcher Kellie Reid's shin guard, over the 15-foot backstop, allowing Alemany's Elena Lira to score from third base.

Lira's bizarre run gave Alemany an improbable 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs in a first-round game in Sylmar.

``I've never seen anything like that before in my entire life,'' Reid said.

For the second time this season, the Indians (20-4) rallied from a 3-0 deficit to beat Highland (15-12). They took an 8-6, eight-inning decision March 19 in a nonleague game.

``I guess going up 3-0 on us is bad strategy,'' said Indians coach Dudley Rooney, whose team secured its seventh straight 20-win season.

It also improved Alemany's all-time record against Highland to 4-0, including a 1-0 victory in the first round of the 1994 playoffs.

Alemany will meet the winner of Friday's San Gabriel-Redondo game Tuesday in the second round.

Highland, the third-place team from the Golden League, scored two runs (one earned) in the third and another in the sixth off Alemany sophomore Kim Diener (20-4), who threw four consecutive shutouts last week as the Indians overtook o·ver·took
