After advancing to last year's Southern Section Masters meet in the 200 meters as a freshman, Fletcher is used to competing at a high level.

But he's used to wide-open tracks, not to action that more closely resembles being in a human pinball machine.

Fletcher won't have to worry about turning in his first race. He will compete in the 50 meters and then run a leg on Alemany's mile relay team.

Other top area athletes competing today include Chaminade's Liz Giltner (high jump, 50-meter hurdles), Palmdale's Kadrina Coffee (500 meters), Kim Mortensen of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Giltner is one athlete who will be more than comfortable competing indoors today. This will be her third appearance at the meet. She has also competed in several other indoor meets during her career.

And the junior, who is one of the best prep heptathletes in the nation, hopes to kick off a season of high goals with a solid effort today. She has been working out at least two hours a day since September with the goal of clearing 6 feet in the high jump. She has a personal best of 5-8.

"I don't really think I have anything to prove," Giltner said. "It's more for me than anyone else. I've been stuck at 5-8 for the last couple of years."
