``We're just doing it for ourselves,'' Alemany pitcher A.J. Anthony said. ``We have nothing to prove to anybody. We don't care

 what they think.''

It's getting difficult to think the Indians (3-0) are the same program that finished below .500 and won just three Mission League games last season. Instead they might soon be thought of as champions, since Alemany remains in contention to represent the Southern Section in Saturday's tournament final.

``We knew we were going to be good,'' said Mike Strazzeri, one of Alemany's three-year varsity members. ``So this is what we expected.''

Tuesday's game was a good step in convincing others this is what should be expected. Kennedy, the defending tournament champion, also entered the day undefeated. Although the Cougars lost most of their starters from last season, they had returning senior starter Bobby Phillips (1-1) pitching and All-City selection Adam Geery hitting. Kennedy stunned stun

Andres Fernandez put Alemany ahead for good with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, breaking a 5-5 tie. Two Kennedy throwing errors gave the Indians two more runs in the inning.

and Raymond Ravago to open the first inning. Anthony extended the lead to 2-0 with a solo home run in the second inning.

A two-run home run by Geery, who went 3 for 4, tied the game in the third inning, but the Indians untied it with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

``I think we did OK, but I think we can do a lot better,'' said Strazzeri, who added that although recognition will come with success, it's not something the team thinks about.

``I think the players are giving us respect. They're starting to see what we can do. But I don't think a lot of other people are.''

The doubt in the Indians' ability could stem from the fact that these are mostly the same players who struggled a year ago - Alemany has seven returning starters. However, the Indians think that is their strength.

``It's just experience,'' Strazzeri said. ``I think we throw harder, we field the ball better, we hit harder. We all got stronger. I think the experience is the main thing.''

Attitude and confidence are improved, too.

``We made a lot of changes during the summer,'' Anthony said. ``We are a different team. Basically it's heart. We play to win.''
