ALEMANY'S DUES REFUNDED : ALEMANY 62, LA PUENTE 39.

Byline: Chris Branam Daily News Staff Writer

This was the moment that made all those 6 a.m. practices worthwhile. And all that running. And all those shootarounds.

It was also a time to erase all doubts about Alemany High girls' basketball.

The Indians capped a satisfying season with a 62-39 victory over La Puente La Puente (lä pwĕn`tē), city (1990 pop. 36,955), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; laid out 1841, inc. 1956. It was the third and most unlikely title for coach Melissa Hearlihy, who wept after the game as she accepted congratulations from fans and when she talked to the players in the locker Things commonly known as lockers include:

``I cry about everything,'' Hearlihy said after meeting with the team. ``I'm just so happy for the kids. It's been an uphill battle Uphill Battle was an metalcore band with elements of grindcore and noisecore. The group was based out of Santa Barbara, California, USA. History

This was supposed to be a rebuilding season for the Indians, who returned only two starters. Instead, they went 24-6 and coasted through the playoffs.

``It was a whole new team,'' Hearlihy said. ``Everybody expected us to fall apart.''

After gaining the division's No. 1 seed, Alemany was heavily favored to blow out La Puente, which had scored just 26 points in a semifinal victory over Ocean View. But the second-seeded Warriors

``(Hearlihy) got mad at us,'' said Alemany guard Kelli Kobayashi, who scored a team-high 17 points. ``I think we were kind of relaxed.''

Maybe a little uptight, as well. The Indians played tentatively in the second quarter and had 11 turnovers in the first half.

``I told them that I thought we came here to play for a title,'' Hearlihy said. ``We didn't look very happy to be here.''

The Indians came out aggressively in the second half. Kate Beckler scored eight of her 16 points in the third quarter and help key a 12-2 run that gave Alemany a comfortable 47-30 lead.

``We were kind of shaky (in the first half),'' Beckler said. ``We felt that we shouldn't be that close to (La Puente).''

La Puente's Erika Olivas made back-to-back 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter and the Indians' lead was cut to 47-36. But the Warriors substitute sparingly spar·ing

Kobayashi had five of her game-high seven assists in the second half. She was 3 for 6 from beyond the 3-point line.

``(Kobayashi) had an awesome game,'' Hearlihy said. ``She played like a senior.''

``She's only cleared to run,'' Hearlihy said of Mullins. ``I cleared it with her parents.''

Olivas scored 21 points and made 5 of 9 3-point attempts. But she also had nine turnovers.
