MISSION HILLS - It was well past 6:30 in the evening and the sunlight was rapidly fading behind Newhall Pass Newhall Pass is a mountain pass in Los Angeles County, California, USA. Historically called San Fernando Pass and Fremont Pass, it separates the Santa Susana Mountains from the San Gabriel Mountains. . The Alemany football team had been on the field for a good three hours already, working in full pads in the 90-plus degree heat.

The Indians had another good practice, and seeing as how it was Friday, coach Dean Herrington could've given them a break from conditioning.

But Herrington hasn't become one of the most respected offensive minds in the area by cutting corners, and so the team had to run.

No one complained. No one even sighed too loudly.

And just like that, Herrington knew he might be onto something here.

``A couple of days ago, we were out here for three, three and a half hours and people are looking around like, `Are we still out here?''' Herrington said. ``We've been out here today for over three hours, and nobody says anything. They get it.

``I can't even tell you how much we've improved in the last two days.''

Given Herrington's track record -- he's been the offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during  at area juggernaut Hart High of Newhall and junior-college power College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  -- that's a rather ominous thought for the other three coaches in the Mission League.

Alemany has won only 16 games in the past six years. It's last Mission League title came in 1980. But with Herrington on board, don't expect that to last long.

Still, everyone's being pretty realistic about this year. The Indians are a year or two away from contending for a league title. But Herrington thinks they have enough talent to make things interesting this year.

Alemany's strength will be on the defensive side of the ball, with a strong linebacking core of Mike Lemon (5-foot-7, 185 pounds), Gabe Camarillo (5-11, 200) and Jeremiah Shea (5-7, 175), hard-hitting safety Trevor Kilroy (5-10, 175) and explosive pass-rusher Brooks Porter (6-1, 230).

The offense will rely heavily on the talents of lineman Mark Armelin (6-4, 300), who has developed into a college prospect. Herrington is running the same offense he did at Hart and COC See chip on chip. , so expect senior quarterback Billy Rojas to put up big numbers. His primary targets should be Leandro Quesada and Chris Gant. Keep an eye on promising freshman running back Malcolm Marable.

With 13-time league champ Notre Dame Notre Dame IPA: [nɔtʁ dam] is French for Our Lady, referring to the Virgin Mary. In the United States of America, Notre Dame  of Sherman Oaks off to the new Serra League, the title is up for grabs. Chaminade of West Hills and St. Francis of La Canada are the preseason favorites.

Chaminade coach Ben McEnroe and St. Francis coach Jim Bonds said they're sorry to see Notre Dame go because the competition was good for their teams.

``I'm a traditionalist,'' McEnroe said. ``I don't like messing with things. It was nice to have a team like that. We enjoyed competing against (Notre Dame). ... But yes, it certainly opens things up for us now.''

Last-place Harvard- Westlake of Studio City is also gone, having been dropped into the Del Rey Del Rey may refer to:

League, so the Mission League is left with just four teams and nobody seems particularly excited about it.

``It's weird being in a four-team league because if you stub A small software routine placed into a program that provides a common function. Stubs are used for a variety of purposes. For example, a stub might be installed in a client machine, and a counterpart installed in a server, where both are required to resolve some protocol, remote procedure  your toe at all, your playoff hopes are in jeopardy,'' Bonds said.

Chaminade graduated quarterback Kyle Thompson Kyle Thompson (born April 25, 1979) is an American professional golfer.

Whoever gets the call under center will have two big targets in senior wide receiver/safety Aubrey Smith (6-2, 190) and junior tight end Hunter Paulsen (6-2, 225), the younger brother of UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

 tight end Logan Paulsen.

Smith is more dangerous defensively. He's got scholarship offers from San Diego State and Utah as a safety. Smith, senior linebacker Gianni D'Ovidio and defensive lineman Shaun Davies should anchor the defense. Two intriguing additions are senior defensive back Josh Borgrebbe (6-2, 190), who played baseball last year, and senior linebacker Kevin Pilar Pilar

The running game should also be solid with junior Nathan Stark (376 yards, three TDs) and senior fullback Darryl Carter, who also is one of the team's top defensive linemen.

Former assistant coach Pete Gonzalez got a huge break this week when senior running back Nicolas Grigsby decided to remain at the school after working out with the team at California High during the summer.

Grigsby, who originally committed to Arizona, is being recruited by USC and Washington. He rushed for more than 1,800 yards as a junior and has a flair for making big plays.
