In August 2005, Scottish and Newcastle closed the Tyne Brewery.

The Chronicle revealed this week how Broon Ale chiefs are celebrating the beer's 80th anniversary by asking you to come up with an idea for a new, limited edition label.

They are also in talks with Gateshead-based old fashioned n. 1. A cocktail consisting of whiskey, bitters, and sugar, garnished with with fruit slices and often a cherry.

 football shirt maker Toffs to produce a limited-edition top commemorating Newcastle United's 1927 League win and Broon's creation.

Our exclusive picture shows an early design of the shirt, which is expected to be available by the summer. Ben Fell of Toffs said: "The image is only of a prototype at this stage.

"The shirt is also a celebration of 80 years since Newcastle Brown Ale first went on sale.

"It was a big year for Tyneside because it is also 80 years since Newcastle United last won the league title.

"Newcastle Brown Ale has, of course, developed into a global brand and the sales of the shirt will reflect this, with the product being available as far afield as the USA, Brazil and Australia."

Douglas Cook, Scottish and Newcastle's assistant brand manager for Brown Ale, said: "The year 1927 was an important one in Tyneside's history.

"Lt Col Jim Porter unveiled the first bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale, and also Newcastle United won the league.

"We thought there was a natural tie-up there and we are working with Toffs to produce a special commemorative shirt."
