announced shipment of Aldus The software company that pioneered desktop publishing with its PageMaker program for the Macintosh. Aldus was acquired by Adobe. PageMaker A full-featured desktop publishing program for Windows and Macintosh from Adobe. PageMaker is the de facto standard in the graphics arts industry. It is used to create ads, brochures, newsletters and books of all sizes and kinds. By combining PageAhead with PageMaker, Database Edition enables customers to easily query, retrieve and format data from database files, then place it in publications they produce with PageMaker. "With PageMaker Database Edition, people can bring raw data from dBASE and ASCII files into PageMaker and present the information in a professional-looking piece," said Leslie Magid, Aldus product line manager. "The next release will extend that publishing power by supporting data from Microsoft Excel, SQL Server, Oracle RDBMS and Paradox." PageMaker Database Edition offers an intuitive spreadsheet-like interface along with PageMaker's standard pasteboard interface. Users can combine data from multiple database tables, calculate new fields based on any data in a database, and sort the data in practically any order. PageMaker Database Edition is the second Aldus product to be shipped in the past two months, joining Aldus(R) PhotoStyler(TM) 1.1. Three more products, Aldus FreeHand(R) 3.1 for the Macintosh, Aldus FreeHand 3.0 for Windows and Aldus PageMaker 4.2 for the Macintosh, are slated for shipment by the year end. SYSTEM CONFIGURATION Aldus PageMaker Database Edition requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 and Windows 3.0-compatible hardware. The recommended configuration is a 386-based DOS-compatible computer, 4MB of RAM, and 80MB hard disk, a high-resolution graphics adapter card and a mouse. The minimum configuration is a 286-based DOS-compatible computer, 2MB of RAM, a 20MB hard disk, an EGA or Hercules graphics adapter card, and a mouse or other pointing device. PRICING AND AVAILABILITY Aldus PageMaker Database Edition, which includes PageMaker 4.0 for Windows and the PageAhead software, has a suggested retail price of $995 (U.S.).
