ALDUS RELEASES TIFF 6.0 SPECIFICATION FOR DEVELOPERS
SEATTLE, July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today

announced the release of TIFF (Tag Image File Format) specification revision 6.0. TIFF is a platform- and device-independent file format designed to promote the interchange of digital image data between computer software and hardware.
Revision 6.0 supports many new technologies, including Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression for managing file sizes of color TIFF images and YCbCr for handling digital video images. The revised specification also supports tiled images, process color (CMYK) images used in color publishing and prepress systems, CIE Lab images, and other enhancements and extensions.
Aldus led an advisory committee of companies in the creation of the TIFF 6.0 specification. Participating companies included Apple Computer, C-Cube, Camex, Crosfield, Digital Optics Ltd., Frame, Hewlett- Packard, IBM, Interleaf, Island Graphics, Kodak, Linotype-Hell, Quark, Silicon Graphics, Sun Microsystems, Time Arts, US WEST, Wang and Xerox.
"TIFF is a key part of Aldus' strategy for meeting the needs of creative professionals," said David Cloutier, manager of Aldus Developer Relations. "TIFF is, and will continue to be, a leading industry-wide standard."
The first TIFF specification originated in 1986 when Aldus, Microsoft and leading scanner vendors worked together to create a standard file format for images used in desktop publishing. Since then, TIFF has been implemented by most scanner manufacturers and publishing applications and has become an industry standard for image-data storage and exchange.
