ALDUS CONSUMER DIVISION SIGNS LETTER OF INTENT WITH AFTER HOURS SOFTWARE

SAN DIEGO, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp.'s (NASDAQ: ALDC) Consumer Division today announced it has signed a letter of intent to acquire After Hours Software (AH Software Inc.), creator of TouchBase and DateBook, award-winning personal information management products for the Apple Macintosh computer. The privately held company has 33 employees and is based in Los Angeles.
Under the terms of the letter of intent, the acquisition is subject to completion of due diligence review by Aldus and satisfaction of other conditions. Aldus is not commenting on the details of the acquisition.
After Hours Software was founded by Richard Wolpert in 1986 as a consulting firm and subsequently began developing and marketing value-priced personal information management software. The company's annual revenues have more than tripled in the last three years.
The two companies share similar goals and product strategies. "Our goal at Aldus Consumer Division is to provide high-value consumer software," said Steve Cullen, Aldus vice president and general manager of the division. "We intend to grow through both acquisition and internal development. Personal information products are poised for rapid growth, and this acquisition is a significant step forward in building our portfolio of consumer products."
 Award-winning Products
TouchBase, a contact-management program, was released in 1991. It was followed in 1992 by DateBook, an integrated calendar and to-do list. The latest versions, TouchBase Pro and DateBook Pro, were released in April.
A recent TouchBase/DateBook product bundle was a 1993 Macworld magazine "Editor's Choice" as the best personal information management system. MacUser has selected TouchBase as its "Editor's Pick" for best address book software. And also this year, Home Office Computing magazine designated TouchBase its "Editor's Pick" as best Macintosh address book and DateBook as best Macintosh calendar program.
TouchBase and DateBook are sold at computer-software resellers, including CompUSA and Egghead, as well as at consumer-electronics stores such as Circuit City and Silo. They are also available at such office- products stores as BizMart, Office Max, and Office Depot, where they are currently bundled together in a sales promotion with certain models of the Macintosh Performa series.
"Teaming up with Aldus would ensure that our products stay on top of the fast-growing personal information management market," Wolpert said. "We are looking forward to working with Aldus in expanding our engineering resources and worldwide distribution channels."
DateBook and TouchBase would join the other products of the Aldus consumer line: Gallery Effects, IntelliDraw, Personal Press, and SuperPaint.
Aldus Consumer Division, formerly Silicon Beach Software Inc., was acquired by Aldus Corp. in 1990. The division's mission is to become a leading worldwide supplier of value-priced consumer software.
