ALDUS ANNOUNCES PERSUASION 2.1 FOR BOTH THE MACINTOSH AND WINDOWS (Product Announcement)

ALDUS ANNOUNCES PERSUASION 2.1 FOR BOTH THE MACINTOSH AND WINDOWS
SEATTLE, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC) today announced updates to both the Macintosh and Windows versions of Aldus Persuasion(R), its award-winning desktop presentations program.
Aldus Persuasion 2.1 for the Apple Macintosh and Aldus Persuasion 2.1 for Microsoft Windows 3.0 each have significant new features and enhancements. Both include the new Persuasion Player -- a small, runtime application for viewing and distributing Persuasion slide shows independently of the Persuasion application; cross-platform support between the two new versions; and interapplication communication, including support for Publish and Subscribe in the Macintosh version and DDE (dynamic data exchange) and OLE (object linking and embedding) in the Windows version.
Aldus has also added several platform-specific enhancements, including support for Apple's new QuickTime video technology and major performance improvements to Persuasion for Windows.
"With its ability to display Persuasion files created in either the Macintosh or Windows environment, the Persuasion Player is the easiest and most robust playback mechanism around," said Mark Sherman, Persuasion product marketing manager. "It gives our customers extraordinary flexibility in how they view and distribute presentations. Coupled with version 2.1's ability to transfer and edit files between its Macintosh and Windows versions, the Player makes Aldus Persuasion the best cross-platform solution available."
Presentations to go: On the road and across platforms
The Persuasion Player, a runtime version of Persuasion, facilitates the distribution of on-screen slide shows. It enables presenters to navigate automatically or manually through their slide show (including its build layers and transition effects) using any DOS-compatible or Macintosh computer, whether or not the Persuasion application itself is installed. There are two versions of the Player: one for use on Macintoshes, and one that runs under DOS for use on PCs. Both Players can accept files created in the Macintosh or Windows version of Persuasion 2.1.
Also, files created in either version of Persuasion 2.1 can now be transferred to the other. This means that text and data, native-drawn graphics, imported graphics that have been ungrouped, and individually edited slides can all be readily transferred. Customers can also directly import PICT files into Persuasion for Windows, and import Windows metafiles directly into Persuasion for the Macintosh -- whereupon they can even ungroup and edit them on the chosen platform.
 Interapplication support
Persuasion 2.1 for the Macintosh supports Apple's Publish and Subscribe features. Users can Publish PICT and PICT2 images and Subscribe to PICT, PICT2, and EPS files, so graphics can be inserted into Persuasion and instantly updated when the originating file changes.
Persuasion 2.1 for Windows supports DDE for linking data and OLE for linking graphics. For example, users can link their spreadsheet data from DDE applications, such as Microsoft Excel 3.0 and Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, to charts in Persuasion for automatic updates whenever their data changes. Similarly, they can insert graphics from OLE server applications into their presentations.
In response to customer requests, Macintosh-based Persuasion customers can now Cut, Copy, and Paste individual slides or groups of slides between presentations, greatly simplifying the merging of presentations.
Persuasion 2.1 for the Macintosh also supports core Apple Events, TrueType, and 32-bit virtual memory.
 Performance improvements and additional features
Persuasion 2.1 for Windows has two significant performance improvements: operations performed in the Outline view are now much faster, as is switching between the Slide and Outline views.
Aldus has increased the number of AutoTemplates in both versions: there are 28 new templates in the Windows version and 47 in the Macintosh version, for a total of 83 each. Both versions also feature 17 "compatibility AutoTemplates" optimized for transferring files between Macintosh and Windows versions of Persuasion, and an AutoTemplate kit -- a gallery of background masters that simplify the creation of AutoTemplates and provide easy modification options for existing presentations.
Persuasion 2.1 for the Macintosh supports Apple's new QuickTime digital video technology. This offers Persuasion users a practical, effective way of incorporating video and sound into their Macintosh- based presentations. QuickTime movies are imported into a presentation in the same fashion as any other graphic.
 Pricing and availability
Aldus Persuasion 2.1 for the Macintosh is available immediately from Aldus dealers in the United States and Canada for a suggested retail price of $495 (U.S.). Aldus Persuasion 2.1 for Windows, also $495, will be released in the U.S. and Canada within 30 days. Versions of both products localized for European and Pacific Rim markets will be announced later.
