ALDUS ANNOUNCES PERSONAL PRESS 2.0

 ALDUS ANNOUNCES PERSONAL PRESS 2.0
SAN DIEGO, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Aldus Corp. (NASDAQ: ALDC)

today announced Aldus Personal Press 2.0 for the Macintosh, a major new release of its entry-level page layout program. Developed by Aldus subsidiary Silicon Beach Software, Personal Press is the first page layout software to design and assemble users' text and graphics automatically.
 KEY FEATURES
Personal Press 2.0 will include several new features and key enhancements to make it even faster and more automated than before. Personal Press already assists users during layout with its unique preview technology, which shows the result of almost any action before it's taken, giving users constant interactive and visual feedback as they work.
As part of this underlying automation technology, version 2.0 will include over 50 "intelligent" AutoCreate templates, which will make publications practically create themselves. These templates will present users with a series of options regarding how they'd like the document to look (two or three columns, with or without a table of contents, and so on), and will guide them through creating it with their own text and graphics. The program will then design, build and "clean up" the document down to the last detail, so it will be ready to print in a matter of minutes.
"Personal Press 2.0's increased automation and new features will enable users to produce their publications faster and more easily than ever before," said Kathy Davids, product marketing manager for Personal Press. "We want to make page layout as effortless as possible for our users."
Personal Press 2.0 will include other automated enhancements, as well. A new copy-fitting feature will automatically adjust the font size and spacing of text to fit a document perfectly into a designated space. An AutoFlow feature, in turn, will automatically add pages to a document to accommodate the full length of imported text.
Aldus' new Additions technology will also be incorporated into Personal Press 2.0 to extend the program's capabilities for specialized desktop publishing tasks. With over 50 Additions included, users will be able to automate many tasks, such as creating enlarged and dropped capitals at the beginning of paragraphs, formatting bulleted text and making pull quotes (enlarged text embedded into surrounding text for emphasis). The program will also be System 7 savvy, with support for Balloon Help, Apple Events, Subscribe, TrueType, 32-bit addressing, virtual memory and QuickTime movies.
In response to customer requests, Personal Press will now enable users to edit text at any magnification they wish from 10 percent to 400 percent. Version 2.0 will also have dramatically reduced screen- redraw times and will be 100-percent to 2,000-percent faster at most operations.
Personal Press will import graphics in PICT (up to 24-bit color), TIFF (1- to 8-bit grayscale), EPS, MacPaint, ThunderScan and Aldus Digital Darkroom Archive file formats. It will import text files in many formats, including Microsoft Word or Works, MacWrite, ASCII (text-only) and RTF.
 PRICING AND AVAILABILITY
Aldus Personal Press 2.0 will have a suggested retail price of $199(U.S.) and will be available from Aldus resellers in the United States and Canada in the second quarter of 1992. Registered owners of version 1.0 or 1.01 will be able to upgrade to 2.0 for $39.99. Localized versions for European and Pacific Rim markets will be announced later.
