ALCOA OPENS AUTOMOTIVE STRUCTURES OFFICE IN MUNICH TO FACILITATE EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

MUNICH, Germany, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcoa Automotive Structures & Technology GmbH, the subsidiary of Pittsburgh-based Aluminum Company of America (NYSE: AA) responsible for aluminum automotive body structures, has opened an office here to facilitate development programs with European automakers.
The new Munich office is in addition to the Alcoa Automotive Structures & Technology plant under construction at Soest, Germany, which will produce components and subassemblies for aluminum spaceframe body structures. The Soest plant is scheduled for completion this summer and will be operational later this year.
According to David W. Schlendorf, Alcoa Automotive Structures & Technology president, Munich's central location to European car makers was the key factor in the decision to locate the new office here.
"The growing number of aluminum body structure programs involving European car companies requires the increased interaction and accessibility this new office makes possible," Schlendorf said. "The new Munich office and the soon-to-be-opened Soest plant demonstrate Alcoa's commitment to the future of the aluminum body structure."
Aluminum's light weight, combined with the remarkable advantages of the spaceframe body structure, is being applied in a number of innovative car programs as automakers consider new ways to reduce fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions as well as enhancing the recyclability of their cars.
