ALCO INTERNATIONAL'S INCOMED SEEKS FDA CLEARANCE
TO BEGIN MARKETING BARRIER INTEGRITY MONITOR
SAN DIEGO, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Alco International Group Inc. (NASDAQ: ALIG) has filed a 510(k) with the Food and Drug Administration seeking clearance to begin marketing the Barrier Integrity Monitor (TM) (BIM), an electronic device that detects blood contact between health care workers and patients.
By alerting health care workers to possible blood exposure as a result of a breech in surgical gloves or gowns, the BIM should lessen the risk of transmission of such blood-borne diseases as human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS), staph and hepatitis.
According to Robert Donnell, president of Alco and its wholly owned subsidiary, InCoMed Inc., recent data indicates that more than 200 health care workers die annually from hepatitis contracted in a hospital, where 28 percent of surgical procedures involve an unprotected exposure to blood by the surgical staff.
"These sobering facts support worldwide estimates of market potential for the BIM system in the hundreds of million of dollars," he said. "The filing of a pre-market notification with the FDA is a major milestone in the development of this valuable device. We are on schedule to begin marketing the BIM in mid-1992."
Alco, through its subsidiaries, InCoMed and FemTek Inc., operate two primary businesses: the marketing of medical products for infection control and women's fertility products, and Alco Marine Agents provides transportation of containerized cargo from South Florida to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.
