ALCATEL/KE AND LEVEL ONE SIGN PACT TO DEVELOP SDSL TECHNOLOGY.

Alcatel ke Kommunikations-Elektronik (Alcatel/ke) and Level One Communications (Nasdaq:LEVL) have signed an agreement to jointly develop Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) is a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) variant with E1-like data rates (72 to 2320 kbit/s). It runs over one pair of copper wires, with a maximum range of about 3 kilometers.  (SDSL See DSL.

Standardization of this symmetric DSL See DSL.  technology is under way in regional and international standards bodies, including the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (body) European Telecommunications Standards Institute - (ETSI) A European version of the ITU-T(?). , the American National Standards Institute See ANSI.

.

Joint development will culminate in products compliant with standards as they are ratified.

This new symmetric DSL, based on Level One's HDSL2 technology, is a breakthrough in DSL service. Specifically designed for business services, the technology enables telecommunication providers to deliver full E1 performance over a single twisted pair cable with the same reach, robustness and spectral compatibility of today's two-pair High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line (communications, protocol) High bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line - (HDSL) A form of Digital Subscriber Line, providing T1 or E1 connections over two or three twisted-pair copper lines, respectively.  (HDSL) technology.

The transmission performance of HDSL2 has been validated after its meticulous specification in the ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  standards committee. Designed to coexist with other services, SDSL offers the promise of a standards-based, interoperable transmission scheme that will serve both carriers and business customers worldwide.

The jointly developed SDSL technology is suitable to both narrow and broadband transport applications throughout international environments. As such, carriers can offer an array of business related services including data combined with multiple voice channels. Level One's architecture, design platform and integration path allows partners the flexibility to optimize performance for specific noise environments including regional loop and noise conditions common in the European and international telephone networks.

This flexibility will also allow Level One's customers the ability to migrate to regional needs and forthcoming requirements for spectrum management. Products based on this technology will deliver rate selective symmetric services from 144Kbps to 2.3Mbps.

The Pulse Amplitude Modulation (PAM) based solution is suitable for both mixed mode crosstalk environments and spectral compatibility with coexisting services. PAM qualities including low latency and symmetric operation make it ideal for remote Local Area Network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ) to Wide Area Network (WAN) connections for business needs.

ability of HDSL2 reduces noise in the local loop thereby actually improving the overall performance of coexisting services. These elements of HDSL2 allow operators to deliver guaranteed symmetrical services over demanding loop environments while allowing the coexistence of additional services.

About ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to determine and produce the telecommunications standards that will be used for decades to come. It is an open forum that unites 647 members from 49 countries, representing administrations, network operators, manufacturers, service providers, and users.

Any European organization proving an interest in promoting European telecommunications standards has the right to represent that interest in ETSI and thus to directly influence the standards-making process.
