``I categorically deny these charges and intend to vigorously defend myself against these allegations,'' Albert said in a statement. ``I am confident that I will be completely exonerated when these allegations are addressed in a public courtroom.''

If convicted, Albert, 53, faces a prison term of five years to life.

Albert will be allowed to turn himself in next week. He is scheduled to appear Thursday in Arlington Circuit Court but the hearing could be delayed until Monday to give his attorneys more time to prepare.

He is divorced from his first wife and engaged to a free-lance television producer.

``Obviously, it is inappropriate for us to comment at this time until we have had an opportunity to fully review the allegations with Marv, his representatives and our lawyers,'' NBC said in a statement.

, I'm shocked,'' he said. ``This is not consistent with the Marv I know.''

The NBA and MSG Network declined comment and several other of his colleagues failed to return phone calls.

The incident allegedly occurred in the early-morning hours of Feb. 12 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Arlington, Va., hours after the Knicks played the Washington Bullets in nearby Landover, Md.

According to Arlington police spokesman Tom Bell, Albert and a 41-year-old woman from Vienna, Va., whom he has known for 10 years, began arguing shortly after they arrived at his hotel room.

``She says he threw her on the bed and that he bit her severely, viciously, on the back,'' Bell said. ``She had bite marks, 10 or 15 of them, and then . . . he forced her to commit sodomy.'' In some places, the flesh on her back was ``ripped,'' he said.

Police were called after the woman went to National Hospital in Arlington, where she was treated for the bites and released, Bell said.

Bell said investigators proceeded very deliberately because of Albert's high profile.

``We wanted to make sure that she checked out, that she was not some kind of gold digger or something, and she is not,'' Bell said.

Police prepared warrants several weeks ago and planned to arrest Albert if he came to the area for an April 30 playoff game between the Bullets and the Chicago Bulls. However, Albert did not work the game.

``If he had been in town and we could have found him, we would have arrested him on those warrants,'' Bell said.

Albert, known for his staccato voice and call of ``Yesssss!'' when a player scores, joined NBC in 1977, working six NBA Championships and three NBA All-Star Games. He covered three Olympics with the network, announcing basketball and boxing.
