Narrow inlet of the Pacific Ocean, southeastern Alaska coast, U.S. About 60 mi (97 km) long, it contains 16 active glaciers that descend from the St. Elias Mountains to the east and Fairweather Range to the west.
National Park in June, July and August, a 30 percent increase over last year's 107 ships. It would also prohibit cruise ships from sailing in the prime feeding areas for humpback whales.

If the Interior Department approves, the measures could take effect before the 1996 summer tourist season. If the Park Service finds that no harm would be done to whales, air quality or the park's overall ambience, the number of ships could rise to a maximum of 184 in 1998 - two a day for 92 days.

The other proposal involves Denali National Park and Preserve Denali National Park and Preserve (dənäl`ē), in the Alaska Range, S central Alaska; comprising Denali National Park (4,740,912 acres/1,919,398 hectares), est. as Mt. , which more than 250,000 people visit each year, most of them through the park entrance, accessible from the park road on the north side of the Alaska Range.

But with more people also visiting the park from the south side of the range, along a road that stops several miles short of the park boundary, Park Service officials say that expanded trails and facilities are needed on the south side.

Their proposed $42 million plan, most of it to be paid for through federal highway construction funds, calls for a visitor center, campground, cabins and trails to be built at the west end of Denali State Park Denali State Park is a 325,240-acre (1,316 km²) state park in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located adjacent to the east side of Denali National Park and Preserve, along the Parks Highway. , just outside the national park, and for major improvements to a 41-mile access route.
