ALASKA AIRLINES TO SERVE A FOURTH RUSSIAN CITY; AND MORE FLIGHTS PLANNED FOR CURRENT DESTINATIONS.


SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 1995--Alaska Airlines plans to begin scheduled passenger service to a fourth Russian Far East Far East, in the most restricted sense, region comprising the countries of E Asia, namely China, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Mongolia, and Taiwan, and the easternmost portion of Russian Siberia (see Russian Far East Russian Far East, formerly Soviet Far East, federal district (1989 est. pop. 7,941,000), c.2,400,000 sq mi (6,216,000 sq km), encompassing the entire northeast coast of Asia and including the Sakha Republic, Maritime Territory (Primorsky Kray), Khabarovsk Territory, the Amur, Magadan, Kamchatka, and Sakhalin regions, the Jewish Autonomous Region, and the Koryak and Chukotka autonomous areas.). Alaska will fly to the port city of 200,000 once per week using 140-seat McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft. Service will be nonstop from Anchorage and same-plane one-stop from Seattle.

Flights will depart the U.S. on Saturdays and arrive on Sundays. Return flights depart on Saturdays and arrive on Fridays, gaining a day crossing the international dateline.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski is located on the Kamchatka Kamchatka (kămchăt`kə), peninsula, 104,200 sq mi (269,878 sq km), Russian Far East, separating the Sea of Okhotsk in the west from the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean in the east. Extending from lat. 51°N to lat. Peninsula and has a population of 200,000. It is a major fishing port and is home to a navy submarine base and an air force base.

"Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski and the entire peninsula are emerging as important centers for tourism and commercial development in the Russian Far East," said Dave Palmer, assistant vice president/marketing. Alaska currently serves the Russian Far East cities of Magadan Magadan (məgədän`), city (1989 pop. 152,000), capital of Magadan region, Russian Far East, a port on the Sea of Okhotsk. It has shipyards, canning factories, and a major airport. A highway leads from Magadan to the gold-mining region on the upper Kolyma River., Khabarovsk Khabarovsk (khəbä`rəfsk, khəbərôfsk`), city (1989 pop. 601,000), capital of Khabarovsk Territory and the administrative center of the Far East district, Russian Far East, on the Amur River near its junction with the Ussuri. and Vladivostok Vladivostok (vlă'dĭvŏ`stŏk, –vəstŏk`, Rus. vlä'dyēvəstôk`), city (1989 pop. 634,000), capital of Maritime Territory (Primorsky Kray), Russian Far East, on a peninsula that extends between two bays of the Sea of Japan. with one round-trip flight per week from Anchorage. Service there will be increased to two flights per week on May 7.

Alaska Airlines, which initiated Russian Far East service in 1991, serves 43 cities in Alaska, Mexico, Russia and five Western states.
