ALASKA AIRLINES FILES FOR MEXICO CITY-LOS ANGELES ROUTE
SEATTLE, Dec. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Alaska Airlines announced today it has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to begin service between Mexico City and Los Angeles in the wake of Pan Am's collapse.
Alaska is proposing three round-trips per day using 135-seat McDonnell MD-80 aircraft. The airline is prepared to start service as soon as tomorrow and has pledged to accommodate passengers holding Pan Am tickets.
The Seattle-based airline currently serves four destinations in Mexico -- Guadalajara, Mazatlan, Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos -- with 12 daily flights and has had a long-time interest in Mexico City, according to Julian Acosta, director general of the airline in Mexico.
"Pan Am's demise leaves a void in the Mexico City-Los Angeles market," Acosta said. "Our experience in other Mexico markets and our ability to start service almost immediately make us an outstanding candidate for the job."
Alaska Airlines serves 38 cities in Mexico, Canada, the Soviet Union and six Western states.
