ALARCON TAKES FIRST STEP IN HAHN CHALLENGE.

State Sen. Richard Alarcon took steps Monday to become the first major challenger to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Mayor James Hahn For the Iowa politician, see .

James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California
 in the March 2005 election.

Alarcon, D-Van Nuys, filed papers to begin raising funds to challenge Hahn, who already has raised more than $1.3 million in his bid for a second term.

Alarcon said he is ``dead serious'' about challenging Hahn. Alarcon said a scandal over contracting practices at Los Angeles World Airports Los Angeles World Airports or LAWA is the airport oversight and operations department for the city of Los Angeles, California.

``One thing I've been hearing is that there's a lack of enthusiasm in city government, a lack of wanting to get involved.''

Hahn's political advisers were not available to comment on Alarcon's candidacy.

Others said to be considering bids to challenge Hahn include Councilman Bernard C. Parks Bernard Parks (born December 7, 1943 in Beaumont, Texas) is a member of the Los Angeles City Council, representing the 8th District in South Los Angeles and former Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department.

, former Assembly Speaker Robert Hertzberg Robert Myles Hertzberg was born on November 19, 1954 in Los Angeles, California, was an attorney and businessperson, and served in the California State Assembly from 1996-2002. , City Controller Laura Chick and Councilman Antonio Villaraigosa.

Alarcon said his campaign will be managed by Sacramento-based consultant Ritchie Ross, who has managed previous Alarcon campaigns as well as Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante's failed bid last year to become governor during the Gray Davis recall campaign.
