 Richard Alarcon will face a crowded, if not well-known, group of challengers as he seeks to return to the City Council seat he left in 1995 for the state Senate.

As of Thursday afternoon, Alarcon was the only candidate to have qualified for the March 6 election to fill out the two years left in the term of Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. He was elected as the State Senator for the 20th District of California in November 2006 and was inaugurated in early December. In order to enter the Senate he had to resign as Councilman for the 7th District on the Los Angeles City , who was elected to Alarcon's seat in the state Senate.

But four others had submitted their petitions and will know in the coming week if they have qualified for the uphill campaign against Alarcon, who has the advantage of a long political career in the area and the ability to raise substantial cash.

 Cindy Montanez and Padilla's chief deputy Felipe Fuentes Felipe Fuentes is a Democratic politician from the San Fernando Valley in the U.S. state of California. If a candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes, he or she will be declared the winner. If not, the top two candidates will have a May 15 runoff Runoff
