AKERSON TO LEAVE MCI AT END OF AUGUST

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) today announced that President and Chief Operating Officer Daniel F. Akerson is leaving the company at the end of August to pursue an opportunity in another industry. Although MCI said that it could not disclose where Akerson would be going, it stressed that he would not be working for a competitor.
Chairman and CEO Bert Roberts will assume Akerson's operating duties until a successor is named. Roberts, who became CEO in 1991 and Chairman in 1992, had served as President and Chief Operating Officer since 1985. MCI's business units, which will continue to have full responsibility for day-to-day operations, will report directly to Roberts.
"Dan and I have worked very effectively together for many years, and I am personally sorry to see him leave MCI," said Roberts. "He has made many major contributions to MCI's success during his 10 years of service. An executive of Dan's caliber has many opportunities, however, and I certainly wish him well."
Akerson was named to his current position in 1992, and had previously served as chief financial officer. He joined MCI in 1983 after positions with AT&T and Phillips Petroleum Co. He serves on the boards of MCI, Cray Research Inc., and General Instruments Corp.
"MCI is an extraordinary company and my 10 years here have been a challenging and rewarding experience," said Akerson. "The long distance industry has never been stronger, and MCI has unquestionably emerged as a leading force in shaping that industry. MCI's depth of management and entrepreneurial spirit guarantee that it will continue to succeed."
MCI Communications Corporation, headquartered in Washington, offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of-the-art networks. The company, with 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, is the second largest long distance provider in the U.S. with more than 60 overseas offices in 55 countries and places.
