AIWA RAID TECHNOLOGY Introduces Industry's Most Advanced RAID Migration Implementation; Solution Incorporates Patented Technology Yielding Fastest Migration Times Available.

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 1998--AIWA RAID TECHNOLOGY (ART) Inc. Monday announced its RAID Migration technology, the latest enhancement of its ArrayView remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  and management software.

and expansion of RAID devices -- without requiring system downtime The time during which a computer is not functioning due to hardware, operating system or application program failure. . AIWA's unique solution allows seamless capacity upgrades, RAID level changes and migration previews, and features a patented algorithm algorithm (ăl`gərĭth'əm) or algorism (–rĭz'əm) [for Al-Khowarizmi], a clearly defined procedure for obtaining the solution to a general type of problem, often numerical.  yielding the fastest migration times in the industry. The RAID Migration solution will be demonstrated at Networld+Interop in Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States.  from May 5-8 in ART's booth No. 1311.

"AIWA's RAID Migration technology provides many `firsts' for the storage industry," said Gerry Smith, chief technology officer, ART. "No other RAID migration implementation provides as many advanced features, allowing users to seamlessly change RAID levels and capacities with such speed and efficiency."

RAID migration, the process of reconfiguring storage elements without shutting down or interrupting access to data, can save companies time and money by providing uninterrupted access during upgrades. Without migration, users must back up files, reinitialize the disk array and restore the data onto the newly initialized drives. During this process, data is unavailable and vulnerable for up to 24 hours, interrupting company operations and jeopardizing critical data.

AIWA's RAID Migration solution also allows users to purchase only enough storage capacity to satisfy immediate needs. As it becomes necessary, higher-capacity drives can be purchased and installed through AIWA's RAID Migration function. Without migration capabilities, most users attempt to predict future storage requirements and purchase all storage at one time -- preventing them from upgrading to advanced storage technology and taking advantage of declining storage costs. In addition, this solution enables drive reduction migrations, facilitating the re-deployment of drives to meet changing performance and capacity needs.

AIWA's RAID Migration technology provides the most advanced migration capabilities available today including: -0-

accommodate capacity additions. LAPs allow the user to divide

the capacity of a logical array into user-defined pieces. Each

one of these "pieces" is seen as an independent device by the

host and the operating system operating system (OS)

. This allows all operating

systems to instantly recognize dynamic capacity changes and

utilize the expanded capacity.

: AIWA's patented migration

algorithm yields the industry's fastest migration times by

reducing seek and latency (1) The time between initiating a request in the computer and receiving the answer. Data latency may refer to the time between a query and the results arriving at the screen or the time between initiating a transaction that modifies one or more databases and its completion.  time during the migration operation.

This increases both migration speeds and the host I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

process. Migration speeds are also increased through advanced

migration engine preprocessors which optimize optimize - optimisation  migration

by up to 99 percent.

Unlike competitive solutions, ART's RAID Migration

implementation allows the user to change the drive strip-size

during migration to balance the distribution of I/Os across

the increased drive set. Without this feature, a drive

migration operation may leave drives idle in processing

certain requests, and performance may be degraded de·grad·ed

application, users can access the unique "What If" migration

feature. This analysis allows users to specify a new RAID

configuration and then be told what the resulting capacity and

redundancy will be before requiring a commitment to migration.

This What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get feature prevents wasted

time, money and reduces data loss.
AIWA's RAID Migration solution will be available for the
company's MicroArray III disk array subsystem in April 1998 and for
the RAIDStack disk array subsystem in June 1998.
