Postel Implements New XML-Based Service Enabling Clients to Make

Billing & Invoicing Information Available Online

Postel, a division of the Poste Italiane Group and a market leader in the hybrid communication sector, has introduced Internet Presentment, an innovative Web service powered by XML technology from eXcelon, to allow its clients and their end customers to view, access and archive purchase orders and invoices through the Postel web site. Postel estimates that revenues from Internet Presentment will be approximately 2 million euros in a market expected to reach 12 million euros in Italy by the end of 2003.

Internet Presentment allows Postel's clients to present purchase orders and invoices online to streamline purchasing and billing processes with end customers. This new service complements the traditional production of paper-based mailing communications from digital data sources for mid to large-sized companies and billing institutions. The application reduces IT overhead by managing purchase orders and invoice documents directly from client extranets, ensuring a consistent look and feel and avoiding heavy PDF file transfers between clients and end customers.

Internet Presentment has already been adopted by Snaidero, a worldwide leader in the production of kitchens, headquartered in northern Italy, with 9 plants in Europe and more than 2500 sales outlets all over the world. At the heart of Internet Presentment is eXcelon's eXtensible Information Server (XIS), which provides a native XML repository for correlating the client's invoice and purchase order information. The required information is aggregated using pre-defined business rules and access rights to dynamically create personalized query forms and result sets according to a profile of the user requesting the information. By presenting information electronically, the end user can leverage Internet Presentment's querying and filtering facilities application. In addition, the application provides different levels of invoice information depending on access privileges.

eXcelon's XIS allows companies building distributed applications and Web services to manage large collections of XML documents without compromising the inherent flexibility of XML. By managing XML business documents in memory at the node level, XIS enables XML documents to be dynamically extended throughout the life of a long-running, asynchronous business transaction. In addition, node-level management ensures the speed and throughput necessary to support the performance requirements of today's mission critical applications.
