AIST Develops PFOS Degradation Method.


Tokyo, Japan, Feb 23, 2006 - (JCN) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (産業技術総合研究所  (AIST) announced on February 21 that its Research Institute for Environment Management Technology has developed a method to degrade perfluorooctanyl sulfonate sul·fo·nate

A salt or ester of sulfonic acid.

1. To introduce one or more sulfonic acid groups into an organic compound.

2. To treat with sulfonic acid.
 (PFOS), a kind of organic fluoride compound that has high environmental persistence and bioaccumulation bi·o·ac·cu·mu·la·tion

The increase in the concentration of a substance, especially a contaminant, in an organism or in the food chain over time.

The new method uses water and iron powder to efficiently decompose PFOS into fluoride ion.

Details of this achievement is published in the current issue of US scientific magazine Environmental Science & Technology: Vol. 40, No.3, under the title of "Efficient Decomposition of Environmentally Persistent Perfluorooctanesulfonate and Related Fluorochemicals Using Zerovalent Iron in Subcritical sub·crit·i·cal
