AIST, University of Tsukuba Jointly Discover New Protein Quality Control Mechanism.

Tokyo, Japan, Dec 1, 2005 - (JCN) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (産業技術総合研究所  (AIST) announced on November 30 that its Research Center for Glycoscience has discovered a quality control mechanism of biosynthetic protein in the cell, in collaboration with the University of Tsukuba The current university was established in October, 1973. A forerunner of this university was Tokyo University of Education (東京教育大学 .

Specifically, the joint research group generated abnormal proteins in the GPI anchor, a group of proteins with glycolipid Glycolipid

One of a class of compounds having solubility properties of a lipid and containing one or more molecules of a covalently attached sugar.
found in the cell. Then, they identified an elimination mechanism in which proteasome, a protease complex, degrades and eliminates abnormal proteins. This is the third protein quality control mechanism that has been discovered.

Since the GPI anchor is a protein related to several diseases including BSE and hypophosphatasia, this achievement is expected to elucidate the mechanisms of developing those diseases, promoting the development of various drugs including antfungal, antimalarial antimalarial /an·ti·ma·lar·i·al/ (-mah-lar´e-al) therapeutically effective against malaria, or an agent with this quality.

an·ti·ma·lar·i·al
adj.
Preventing or relieving the symptoms of malaria.
 and antiprotozoal agents.

Details of the research are available in the November 30 online version of US magazine Molecular Biology of the Cell Molecular Biology of the Cell (MBC) is a scientific journal published monthly online and in print by the American Society for Cell Biology. MBC publishes original and scholarly research reports that contribute to the scientific understanding of the molecular basis of cell structure .
