The two parcels of property the authority is seeking to buy on Hollywood Way sit directly opposite the runway and include the gas station where the Southwest Airlines plane came to rest, a restaurant and a dry cleaner, said Victor J. Gill gill, in weights and measures

, spokesman for the Airport Authority.

The authority has been taking a closer look at options to improve safety at the east end of the airport since the Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 with 142 people aboard skidded off a rain-slick runway at Burbank Airport on March 25 and smashed through a fence across Hollywood Way before hitting a car and coming to a stop at the gas station.

``Had the plane veered to the left it would have been pointing straight at the airport parking lot,'' Gill said.

The authority voted to submit applications to the city of Burbank seeking permission to acquire five acres of property and change the use of existing airport-owned property so parking lots A and B can be relocated re·lo·cate

The Airport Authority is also seeking to install a special block less dense than concrete to prevent aircraft from running onto Hollywood Way.

The authority convened in a special session Monday to interview firms responding to requests to perform environmental impact reports for a proposed new terminal building farther from the runway.

The current terminal is 313 feet away from the center lines of the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  allows a minimum of 750 feet, Gill said.

The Airport Authority voted Monday to apply to the Federal Aviation Administration for a $25 million federal grant to pay for the airport improvements on an 80 percent federal and 20 percent local match basis.
