, airport officials said Friday.

The campus was the first of four local schools to be insulated under a noise mitigation Noise mitigation is a set of strategies to reduce unwanted environmental sound. The auditorium and music room were not included when the sound insulation was installed originally because no regular instruction occurred in those rooms. Federal funds can only be spent on facilities used for instructional purposes.

Last year, the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  informed the airport that the auditorium and music room are now regularly used for instruction. The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority then decided to ask the Federal Aviation Administration Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), component of the U.S. Department of Transportation that sets standards for the air-worthiness of all civilian aircraft, inspects and licenses them, and regulates civilian and military air traffic through its air traffic control  for a grant to complete the insulation work at the school.

The FAA is expected to make a decision on the request in the fall. The FAA has already deemed the airport eligible to apply for the funds.

``We are very pleased the FAA approved these two rooms for grant eligibility without requiring additional study,'' said Dios Marrero, acting executive director of the airport. ``The past insulation and air conditioning have made a big difference to the 1,100 students at Luther Burbank. This work will bring even more improvement to the learning environment at the school.''

The cost for the insulation has been estimated at $582,000. The FAA would pick up 80 percent of the tab, and the airport would pay the additional 20 percent.

Since 1989, the airport and the FAA have spent $12.6 million on insulation at Luther Burbank, Glenwood Elementary in Sun Valley, St. Patrick's School Saint Patrick School or Saint Patrick's School or St Patrick's School may refer to:

The airport expects to spend $120 million on its insulation programs by 2015.
