Angry neighbors of the Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits.  on Tuesday criticized a plan to soundproof sound·proof

some homes in the area, saying it was inadequate and that efforts should be focused instead on reducing noise from the planes themselves.

``This is not right for the Valley. We do not want management of noise. We want elimination of noise,'' said Ann Roehrick-Lowery, a North Hills resident speaking at a meeting of the Van Nuys Airport Citizens Advisory Council.

There are several basic approaches to reducing sound: increasing the distance between source and receiver, using noise barriers to block or absorb the energy of the sound  would be unsatisfactory because it would not allow them to enjoy the outdoors or leave their windows open.

They also complained that the soundproofing plan was confined to a small area next to the airport.

``We can't watch TV. We can't use the telephone or even have a normal conversation around the dinner table,'' she said. ``You can live in your house as a prisoner, but don't even try to have a barbecue in your back yard with company.''

, the agency which runs the Van Nuys facility, is working on a soundproofing plan for 150 houses and 900 apartment units near the airport, at a cost of $15 million. The soundproofing work, which will involve

installing new windows and doors, as well as insulation and air ventilation, is expected to start by next summer.

After hearing from the residents Tuesday night, the advisory council debated a motion to declare its support for noise control rather than soundproofing, but the motion lost 3-9.

The move, however, disappointed many local residents who noted that it would allow those noisier Stage 2 jets already stationed at the airport to remain. Residents say that the Stage 2 jets, which were built before 1983, are a constant source of irritation and should be removed altogether.
