AIRLINES TRIM FARES FOR HOLIDAY : THANKSGIVING PRICES GOOD ON MANY ROUTES.

The major airlines have announced fare sales for selected domestic and international routes throughout the Thanksgiving Thanksgiving

Major U.S. airline. American was created through a merger of several smaller U.S. airlines and incorporated in 1934. It continued to buy the routes of other airlines, becoming an international carrier in the 1970s; its routes include South America, the
 announced round-trip fares of $88 to $298 for travel Nov. 24, 25 or 28 with return travel Nov. 28 or 29.

Delta Airlines said Monday that it was offering $96 to $196 round-trip fares from travel Nov. 28 and 29 only.

USAir and United Airlines lowered their fares to match both sales. Most airlines typically match competitors' fares during special offers.

The $88 fares from American and its competitors were offered on short flights, such as Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston; and Chicago-Detroit. For $178, travelers could fly Dallas-Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Chicago-San Antonio; and Boston-Orlando, Fla. The $298 fares were offered on routes including Los Angeles-Miami, New York-San Diego, and Seattle-Fort Lauderdale.

The American fares require a one-day advance purchase and are nonrefundable Nonrefundable

. The Delta fares require no advance purchase but must be ticketed within 24 hours.

The $96 fares on Delta and its competitors included Salt Lake City-Jackson Hole, Wyo., and Cincinnati-Memphis. The $126 fares include Portland, Ore., to Salt Lake City; and Denver-Dallas. The $196 fares were offered on Boston-Las Vegas routes and New York-Seattle routes.

For travel during the coming months, America West dropped its fares on many routes. The seven-day advance round-trip purchase fare on select shorter flights was $158. Some cross-country flights were reduced to $398. The airline also lowered fares on some three-day advance purchases.

Most of the America West sale fares were good for travel through March 23. Florida travel must be completed by Feb. 10, and Mexico travel must be completed by Feb. 27.
