The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  and other South Pacific destinations.

Air New Zealand offers companion tickets to Australia and New Zealand for 50 percent off - $449 with the purchase of one $898 round-trip ticket Noun 1. round-trip ticket - a ticket to a place and back (usually over the same route)

``Take-A-Mate'' fares are valid for travel commencing March 3 through May 31. Minimum stay is seven days; maximum stay is 21 days. Tickets must be purchased within 24 hours of confirmation but no later than Feb. 7.

Also available are ``Pacifica Explorer'' fares, offering flights from Los Angeles to three South Pacific countries for $1,099. Travelers may combine flights to any three destinations, including Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Tonga, Western Samoa Western Samoa, former name of the nation of Samoa.  and Hawaii. The fare is valid through March 31.

See Small airways.  is offering ``Spring Companion Fares'' with the purchase of one round-trip ticket from Los Angeles to Australia ($998) or Los Angeles to New Zealand ($898).

Companion fares are 50 percent off - $499 to Australia, $449 to New Zealand.

The airline is also offering passengers one stopover in Australia, Fiji or New Zealand for an extra $135.

Travel must commence between March 3 and May 31. All tickets must be purchased within 24 hours of reservation confirmation and by Feb. 7. For further information, contact a travel agent, or call Qantas at (800) 227-4500.
