AIR TREADS CLOSES PLANT; GEARS FOR FUTURE GROWTH

ATLANTA, Nov. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The reduced demand for retreaded tires for military aircraft and the continued downsizing in the commercial aircraft industry has led to the closing of the Dallas aircraft tire retreading plant of Air Treads Inc., it was announced today by company officials headquartered here.
Albert K. DeRosa, president and chief operating officer of Air Treads, said that an analysis of current and forecast demand for retreaded aircraft tires could not justify any continued operation of the Dallas facility.
Approximately 45 hourly and salaried workers are affected. The company said it will compensate them with 60 days of advance pay and a severance benefit package.
DeRosa said Air Tread customers will continue to be supplied with uninterrupted service by Air Treads plants here and in Kingman, Ariz. He added that the two remaining plants can more than adequately meet any current or anticipated market demand.
DeRosa said that Air Treads has been restructuring "almost in tandem" with the changes taking place in commercial and military aviation. He said the restructuring is now essentially complete and that Air Treads will now focus on growth as an efficient global business.
Air Treads is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
