AIR TRAVEL FIELD TRIPS CANCELED STUDENTS' PROTECTION CITED.

Byline: Helen Gao Staff Writer

BURBANK - Concerned about the threat of terrorism, the Burbank Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  has suspended all out-of-state field trips that require air travel, officials said Thursday.

As a result, local high schools have had to cancel plans for choir competitions, sports tournaments and an educational field trip to Washington, D.C.

``As a result of Sept. 11 and uncertainties surrounding not only flight safety but venues, we have not approved field trips that require flights across the country,'' said Deputy Superintendent Deputy Superintendent, or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was a rank used by police forces of the British Empire. In some territories it was called Deputy District Superintendent of Police (DDSP).  Gregory Bowman.

The district adopted the policy in the weeks after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the East Coast.

The policy has forced the cancellation of this year's Close Up Program, which for more than a decade has taken dozens of Burroughs, Burbank and other local high school students to the nation's capital.

``At this point, approving a trip to Washington, D.C., would be fraught with concerns not only we would have but parents would have as well,'' said Bowman, noting that access to major government buildings remains uncertain.

While some students have criticized the policy in Burbank High School's newspaper, Burroughs Principal Emilio Urioste Jr. said his students understood the rationale for the policy.

``I did not encounter any resistance,'' he said. ``The focus of my part in talking to Noun 1. talking to - a lengthy rebuke; "a good lecture was my father's idea of discipline"; "the teacher gave him a talking to"

Bowman said he is not sure how long the administrative policy will be in effect.

``It's an open book ... It is until we have more reasonable beliefs the safety of young people would be secure,'' he said.
