The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  to Point Mugu, bolstering hopes that the base will be able to survive future rounds of closures.

The move will bring in the Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 55, a five-aircraft transportation squadron, from Moffett Naval Air Reserve Center in Mountain View. Moffett formerly was an active-duty air station.

``We're really excited about the additional equipment,'' said base spokeswoman Cora Fields. ``Hopefully, it'll put us in a good position for any future rounds'' of base realignments or closures.

The move is part of the Navy's continued efforts to consolidate its equipment in cost-saving arrangements.

``This is just another real feather in the cap for Mugu,'' Gallegly said. ``It will help reinforce the viability of Mugu in the future as we look to future base closings.''

The base at Point Mugu had been considered for cutbacks as part of the Navy's base realignment and closure Base Realignment and Closure (or BRAC) is a process of the United States federal government directed at the administration and operation of the Armed Forces, used by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) and Congress to close excess military installations and realign  program in recent years. Last year, the base received a squadron as part of the Navy's relocation plans.

Now, the base houses about 2,000 active-duty personnel.

Fields said there is room to house the incoming personnel, who are expected to bring with them $7.5 million in payroll wages.
