AIR SEYCHELLES TAKES DELIVERY OF FIRST BOEING 757

SEATTLE, Mar. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- With a celebratory chorus from the African Children's Choir as a send-off, a new Boeing 757-200 for Air Seychelles today departed Boeing Field in Seattle for the Seychelles, according to Boeing Commercial Airplane Group. The journey will include stops in Madrid and in Nairobi, Kenya -- cities the airline, the flag carrier for the Indian Ocean island nation of Seychelles, will service with its new twinjet.
The airplane is carrying 10 tons of medical supplies and clothing destined for relief efforts in Somalia and for charitable causes in Kenya. The supplies, provided by the non-profit organization Friends in the West, will be off-loaded in Kenya for distribution.
The African Children's Choir was formed in 1984 by Friends in the West, and comprises children from the organization's homes and schools in Kenya and Uganda. The homes are supported from proceeds generated through choir concerts. In 1993, the 9th African Children's Choir was formed.
The Air Seychelles 757-200, powered by Rolls-Royce engines and leased from International Lease Finance Corp., will supplement the carrier's long-range operations and also will be used to expand its regional services. The new Boeing twinjet is to operate from Seychelles and will serve Singapore, the Persian Gulf, South Africa, East Africa and Europe.
Air Seychelles also operates a Boeing 767-200ER, which currently serves Europe, Asia and South Africa.
The 757 and the 767 were developed concurrently, so both share similar technological advancements in propulsion, aerodynamics, avionics and materials. This commonality reduces training and spares requirements when both are operated in the same fleet.
The 757's versatility on domestic, regional or intercontinental routes contributes to the medium-range airplane's growing popularity in Africa.
