AIR INDIA RECEIVES FIRST BOEING 747-400

SEATTLE, Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Air India, widely recognized as a pioneer in international air transport, has received the first of four Boeing 747-400s, the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group announced today.
The airplane departed Seattle bound for a ceremonial welcome in India on Saturday. Musicians, media and invited guests are scheduled to greet the airplane in New Delhi with a public reception to herald the arrival of the new jetliner.
With the introduction of the 747-400 into service, Air India will showcase one of the most unique and comfortable airplanes in commercial service: a three-class seating arrangement configured to carry 417 passengers -- 16 in "Maharajah" (first) class, 42 in "Executive" (business) class and 359 in economy class.
Air India currently flies nine 747-200s and two 747-300 Combi passenger/cargo jets. The first of four -400s to be delivered to Air India will be used to service India's expanding tourist market and to gradually replace older-generation equipment.
The 747-400 has the longest range and is the largest Boeing airplane now in service. It boasts technical advances in aerodynamics, structural materials and avionics plus passenger-pleasing interior designs.
The most noticeable aerodynamic improvement, designed to reduce fuel burn and extend the 747-400's range, is the six-foot (1.8 m) longer wing with a six-foot-high winglet angled upward and slightly outward. The winglet provides the effect of having an even greater wingspan without outgrowing the standard airport slot and offers a fuel burn improvement of about 2 percent.
Flown by a crew of two instead of three required in earlier 747s, Air India's 747-400s will be able to fly non-stop and fully loaded, serving Europe and North America on routes such as Bombay-London and London-New York.
For more than 25 years, the ubiquitous widebody has ruled the world of long-range air travel. With its unique position in aviation history, the 747 program is quickly approaching delivery of its 1,000th airplane.
