AIR FUNDS TO PAY FOR 12 NEW BUSES.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - The city of Santa Clarita will purchase 12 natural gas buses with funds provided by the South Coast Air Quality Management District The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD), formed in 1976, is the air pollution agency responsible mainly for regulating stationary sources of air pollution for most of Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside County, and all of Orange county. , city officials said Monday.

The new buses will help cut more than 3 tons of nitrogen oxide Noun 1. nitrogen oxide - any of several oxides of nitrogen formed by the action of nitric acid on oxidizable materials; present in car exhausts
pollutant - waste matter that contaminates the water or air or soil
 from the air each year for a city that has consistently ranked as one of the worst in the nation for ozone pollution.

The buses will be bought with $126,000 that the AQMD AQMD Air Quality Management District
AQMD Action Quake Map Depot
 awarded to the city on March 5.

``I applaud the city's efforts to provide quality transit service to its residents while pursuing clean air technology. This project will improve the quality of life both within the city and the region. I encourage the city to continue its clean air commitment and partnership with the AQMD,'' said Beatrice J.S. LaPisto-Kirtley, a member of the AQMD governing boards.

Los Angeles County has been listed by the federal Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and  as one of the worst regions in the nation for ozone pollution, and Santa Clarita is where the most severe concentrations often are during the summer and autumn months.
