SAUGUS - It's an old joke: How do you get to Carnegie Hall Carnegie Hall

Along with other high school choirs across the country, the Valencia and Saugus clubs received an invitation, based on their previous performances, to perform at Carnegie Hall in March.

``This is a lifetime dream for any musician. This is the pinnacle of performance venues,'' said April Dooley, choir director at Saugus High. ``We want to help the kids go so we're doing this benefit concert to help with traveling expenses.''

The concert fund-raiser, featuring choirs from Valencia and Saugus high schools, will begin at 7 p.m. Monday at the Hart High auditorium, 24825 Newhall Ave.

Ticket prices range from $10 to $30, while an ``angel sponsor'' donation of $100 buys two tickets and an invitation to the preconcert pre·con·cert

After a lunchtime performance Monday at Saugus High, some of the singers looked ahead to the opportunity to grace the same stage that has featured musical giants like George Gershwin, Igor Stravinsky Noun 1. ``Seeing Carnegie Hall is a really big deal, like every singer's dream,'' said Felice Wurst, a Saugus freshman and member of the women's ensemble. ``And performing in front of an audience, we get so hyped. It's like an instant reaction.''

Dooley admits that the March trip will likely be less crowded in light of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

``It's a really difficult time because if you asked them last year, they all wanted to go,'' Dooley said. ``But some are very scared to travel now. It depends on the student.''

While the local choirs will perform Mozart's ``Requiem'' at Carnegie Hall, Monday's fund-raiser will feature various songs and styles, including jazz and classical.

For tickets to the gala fund-raiser, or to inquire about donations, call Debora Loeb at Valencia High, (661) 294-1188, Ext. 526, or Dooley at (661) 297-3900, Ext. 3051.
