AIM Technology "Hot Iron" Awards for Windows NT and UNIX Systems Presented for First Time at UNIX EXPO Plus '96; Compaq Computer Corporation Dominates Both Categories; SCO UnixWare Run by Every Intel-based UNIX System Winner.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 9, 1996--AIM Technology, the Performance Measurement Division of Network General Corporation, and a trusted provider of independent performance benchmarks, announced the winners of its "Hot Iron" awards at the UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
EXPO Plus conference and trade show here today. For the first time, AIM presented the awards, sponsored this year by "Computerworld", to vendors of both UNIX System Noun 1. UNIX system - trademark for a powerful operating system

More than 70 tests of Windows NT systems were conducted by AIM from over a dozen different vendors. Compaq also won 13 of the 20 awards presented to UNIX System vendors, more than two dozen of which ran hundreds of AIM tests to qualify.

of choice among all the winning Intel-based UNIX System vendors. This makes SCO UnixWare the leader among UNIX System implementations for the third consecutive year of the AIM UNIX System Hot Iron Awards.

The performance of workstation hardware running tests designed for network servers produced interesting results. Compaq Workstation, for example, took the Windows NT Hot Iron Award for Best Price/Performance for systems less than $25,000 in both the AIM Technology Domain Server Mix and NT File Server mix categories.

"We are delighted by the enthusiastic response to our Windows NT tests, and the achievements of all of our award-winners," said Tammy Bauer, Director of Performance Measurement for AIM Technology. "Our test results dramatically demonstrate that cost- effective, high-performance Windows NT and UNIX System implementations are available at all price points, and that distinctions between `workstation' and `server' hardware implementations are now defined more by what users want and need and less by vendor packaging."

A Show Full of "Firsts"

This UNIX EXPO Plus not only celebrates the first AIM Technology Hot Iron awards for both Windows NT and UNIX System solutions but it also marks the first time Microsoft has had a major presence at any industry gathering focused primarily on UNIX System offerings.

"The presence of Windows NT and Microsoft at this show underscores the new realities among business computing users," said Laura McQuaid, Show Manager for UNIX EXPO PLUS. "Users are integrating the leading hardware and software environments into high- performance, heterogeneous networks. This show is the premier venue for users who want to compare and contrast the products and vendors they are choosing, with the help of measurements like those provided by AIM Technology."

The Hot Iron awards will be presented at separate ceremonies today at UNIX EXPO PLUS. The UNIX System awards will be presented by Alok Mohan of Santa Cruz Operation (SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. ) Inc. The Windows NT awards will be presented by Bill Gates of Microsoft Corp. A reception honoring all award winners will be hosted by AIM Technology tonight.
