AILING TODDLER MISSES VCR, 'BARNEY' VIDEOS STOLEN FROM HOME.

The burglary of a Sylmar home Friday was one of the hundreds in the area during 1995.

But the theft of a videocassette recorder videocassette recorder (VCR), device that can record television programs or the images from a video camera on magnetic tape (see tape recorder); it can also play prerecorded tapes. , "Barney the Dinosaur" video tapes and other items hit the victim harder than most.

Living in isolation because of a rare immune disorder, 16-month-old Justin Lopez lost a link to the outside world.

"He points to the television, he misses Barney," said Justin's grandmother, Martha Lopez. "Most of the stuff they took was from the baby. People break in and they don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

Confined to his home, Justin spends much of his time watching videos, Lopez said.

The family's home was empty at the time of the break-in - Justin was in the hospital, under observation after he contracted chicken pox chicken pox or varicella (vâr'əsĕl`ə), infectious disease usually occurring in childhood. It is believed to be caused by the same herpesvirus that produces shingles.  and a cough, Lopez said.

Police said the home, in the 13000 block of Herrick, was broken into between 7:45 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Now that Justin is back home, the Lopez family is especially concerned about safety and plans on installing security measures.
