AIDS in Africa.


An estimated 36 million people worldwide are infected with HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. In 1999, AIDS claimed the lives of 2 million sub-Saharan Africans--five times the total number of AIDS-related deaths in the U.S. since HIV was first identified 20 years ago last June.
