No appointments are needed for the tests, which are sponsored by Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County government and are being held at locations through the Antelope Valley.

``Because the epidemic is not going away and the infection numbers are increasing, we're trying to get the word out so that people will feel safe about coming down and getting tested,'' said Keven Farmer, clinic coordinator for the Antelope Valley Hope Center, which supports AIDS patients.

Health officials estimate that as many as 45,000 people in Los Angeles County are infected in·fect

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)

Nearly 16,000 people in Los Angeles County are known to be living with HIV HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), either of two closely related retroviruses that invade T-helper lymphocytes and are responsible for AIDS. There are two types of HIV: HIV-1 and HIV-2. HIV-1 is responsible for the vast majority of AIDS in the United States. , which has caused 26,563 deaths since AIDS was identified in 1981.

The tests will be held at the following locations:

--9 a.m. to noon today at High Desert Hospital, 44900 60th St. W., Lancaster. Call Keven, (661) 945-8508.

--9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at Littlerock Community Clinic, 8201 Pearblossom Highway. Call Keven, (661) 945-8508.

--9 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lake Los Angeles Clinic, 16921 E. Ave. O, Space G. Call Keven, (661) 945-8508.

--9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Palmdale Primary Care Clinic, 1529 E. Palmdale Blvd., Suite 207. Call Keven, (661) 945-8508

--4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Antelope Valley Hope Foundation, 1609 E. Palmdale Blvd., Suite C, Palmdale. Call Alfonso or Emma, (661) 947-1395. The foundation also will host an HIV workshop from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.
