AICPA announces three outstanding CPAs in Government Award.

 members have been honored with the 2006 Outstanding CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  in Government Award. The awards recognize CPAs working in the federal, state and local levels of government who have made significant contributions to the increased efficiency and effectiveness of government organizations and to the growth and enhancement of the profession.

The awards were presented by AICPA Chair Leslie Murphy at the Institute's 23rd Annual National Governmental Accounting Governmental accounting is an umbrella term which refers to the various accounting systems used by various public sector entities. In the United States, for instance, there are three levels of government which follow different accounting standards set forth by independent, private  and Auditing Update Conference. This is the first year the AICPA has selected a winner at all three levels of government. In prior years, one award was granted each year on a rotating basis among the different levels of government.

The honorees are: Jeffery Steinhoff, winner of the federal award, managing director for Financial Management and Assurance, the largest audit team at the U.S. Government Accountability Office The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is the audit, evaluation, and investigative arm of the United States Congress, and thus an agency in the Legislative Branch of the United States Government. ; Craig Watanabe, winner of the state award, captive insurance Captive insurance companies are limited purpose insurance companies established with the specific objective of financing risks emanating from their parent group or groups, they sometimes also insure risks of the parent company's customers.  administrator for the state of Hawaii; and Carla Sledge, winner of the award at the local level, chief financial officer of the Charter County of Wayne, Mich. (Wayne County is the home of Detroit and is the 11th largest county in the country).
